Stellarator magnetic coil

The sun is our energy supplier! Hydrogen nuclei are fused in the sun and helium is created (nuclear fusion). This releases an enormous amount of energy. However, the nuclei only fuse at a temperature of approx. 100,000,000 degrees Celsius. This state is called plasma. No material on earth is suitable as a container for this.



The magnet on display here (stellarator coil) is one of the magnetic coils of the fusion research facility, on loan from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching near Munich.
With the help of many strong magnets (blue in the picture), the plasma can be focused so that it never comes into contact with matter. This is how nuclear fusion can be carried out on Earth.
If we succeed in using this nuclear fusion on an industrial scale, we will be rid of our energy problems!
